What causes canine lung cancer?
All children learn at school when they are little that man has tamed wild animals in the oldest times, when people lived in caves and the first animal to befriend was the dog. Ever since then dogs have been considered man's best friends and have accompanied them everywhere. Dogs offer an unconditioned love to men and they never complain and are for ever faithful and grateful to their masters. But sometimes their masters are the ones who cause their pets' misery and even death.

That happens when people who have dogs smoke in their company and this way the dog is a second-hand smoker. The dog inhales the smoke that was exhaled by the man and all the cancerigenic substances that are still present in theat smoke get into the dog's lung, causing lung cancer and other diseases, too. So if you were curious and wanted to know what causes canine lung cancer now you know: it's second-hand smoke most of the time, I mean over 90% of the cases.

Of course there are causes, too, like the proximity of an industrial area where the level of the noxes in the air is very high or the appearance of another cancer type in the dog's bosy which leads to metastatic cancer and then the lung cancer will be secondary, metastatic cancer, not primary cancer.

Now that you know what causes canine lung cancer you should also know that this type of cancer appears mainly in the large breeds of dogs and in aging dogs, too, so these are considered to be risk factors for canine lung cancer.

Dog owners don't always realize that the dog is sick and that it has cancer, but if they pay some attention they should notice the first signs and symptoms that suggest lung cancer: chronic cough that sometimes may produce phlegm or blood, loss of appetite, weight loss, lethargy . Normally the first sign is that the dog is constantly coughing. But that also happens when the dog has a cold , so it is very hard to make the difference.

Unfortunately the noticeable symptoms are only present when the cancer has already spread all over the dog's body,, so it is metastatic. That means that the only way you can do is make sure you provide the necessary treatment for the dog to have less pain and to live for as long as possible, even though most of the times this means only several months. The treatment for this disease in the case of dogs does not differ much from that used for people , so it's the surgical removal of the tumor, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

There may be some natural remedies available in certain shops, even if they can't remove tumours, but they can make the immune system of the dog stronger and prepare it for the battle with cancer.
