Do Moles Cause Cancer?
Each of us, or almost each one of us, has moles on the skin that sometimes give the face and body image a charming allure while other times they render one’s aspect deformity and ugliness. What is there to be done? Where do moles come from? How are they treated? Do moles cause cancer?

Moles are commonly defined as small pigmented bumps on the skin. In reality, these moles are usually benign tumors and are of many types: the nevuses that are deformities of the skin with embryo or evolution origins which appear at any age but most often in young people and evolve slowly. Then there are the tuberous nevuses in the shape of small bumps at the skin level, like a grain of wheat or corn.

Papillomas or fibromas are moles that appear around the cleavage usually, after the age of 40, and last but not least there are a multitude of vascular and glandular moles, depending on the tissue on which they develop. Their occurrence is no cause for alarm, but we should seek the advice of a dermatologist to receive some adequate directions on how to approach these moles.

Moles also appear due to a series of genetic factors, specific to each particular individual, and they can also appear due to exposure to the sun, lifestyle, certain internal afflictions as well as the manner of skin care. It is not the excess of moles that should worry us, but the change in their aspect. Moles appearing in adults can fit within the pre-cancer or cancer risk segment. The damaging or tearing of a mole does not necessarily mean that cancer will ensue. This is part of the answer to the question “do moles cause cancer?”

The signs that should worry us are those when a mole feels itchy or it is slightly discomforting, and also if it changes aspect. A factor that favors the occurrence of skin cancer is consistent and hazardous exposure to the sun. This means that depending on your type of skin you will have to use creams or lotions for protection against the sun when you are going to the beach. You will also need to stay away from the beach at the times when the UV radiation is peaking and you will need to adapt your clothing (big hats, t-shirts, especially for children and people with sensitive skin).

If a person has moles on a body part that often comes into contact with clothing that is too tight or with an accessory (watch belt, pants belt, bra edge, etc.) then the mole should be removed on preventive grounds. A healthy lifestyle generally prevents a great deal of illnesses, and skin cancer is usually one of them. If such a case is seen by a doctor in due time, then the solution is to surgically remove the mole, and the problem is as good as solved. If the visit to the doctor is postponed, then surgical resection can no longer guarantee a cure and, as everyone knows, skin cancer is highly aggressive.
